RAISE at RVC
Improving Accessibility & Engagement
Curriculum adaptation for postsecondary students with disabilities.
-
Client: Rock Valley College
-
Role: RAISE Instructor
-
Focus: Accessibility, Engagement
-
Delivery: In-person
The Challenge
Instructional materials were developed over time without a unified accessibility or design framework. As a result, content presentation created unnecessary barriers for students with disabilities, and assessment practices lacked clarity and alignment with learning objectives, limiting both instructor effectiveness and learner transparency.
In the RAISE program, the challenge is to create instructional resources that are:
-
accessible to diverse learners
-
engaging and easy to understand
-
practical for staff to implement
-
aligned with both special education and post-secondary practices
My Role & Approach
I work within the RAISE program as an instructor focusing on curriculum adaptation, accessibility, and learner engagement.
My approach emphasizes:
-
learner-centered analysis
-
trauma-informed instructional strategies
-
collaboration with faculty and support staff
Design Process
1. Understanding Learner Needs
-
Taking notes during instructional sessions
-
Identifying engagement and accessibility barriers
-
Considering cognitive load, executive functioning, and emotional regulation
2. Designing Accessible Instruction
-
Simplified language and layout
-
Added visual supports and scaffolding
-
Reduced complexity
3. Supporting Implementation
-
Create materials that staff could easily adapt
-
Focused on clarity and consistency
-
Ensure flexibility across instructional formats
